Continuous Improvement
I have no idea whether it's an original saying, or whether he got it from someone else, but several years ago I heard Alan Weiss, president of Summit Consulting Group, joke about the following in one of his presentations:
"I am constantly amazed at how stupid I was just two weeks ago."
Shortly after hearing Alan say this, I realized that constantly evaluating my own stupidity was a great way to improve on a regular basis. After all, if you can't look back and find something you did last week that seems stupid this week, you aren't learning new things … are you?
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to answer the following question:
"What stupid thing did I do last week?"
Once you select your moment of stupidity, you should then figure out what caused you to make the mistake, what to learn from the experience, how to avoid making the same mistake again, and so on.
To create a pattern of continual improvement, I set up a calendar reminder that beeps at me every Sunday and asks the question above. Of course, the thing I find most challenging each week is selecting which moment of stupidity to address!
Good luck, and have a great week!
